Within the scope of the Faculty of Literature Cultural Talks, Associate Professor Dr. Alaattin Uca from the History Department delivered a conference on May 25, 2023, in the Faculty of Literature Conference Hall to present his co-authored book Cuma Selamlıkları (Friday Salutation Ceremonies), written together with Fatih Utçu. In his speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uca addressed the following points: “The cuma selâmlığı was the official-religious ceremony in the Ottoman Empire that encompassed the sultan’s procession from the palace to the mosque and back in order to perform the Friday prayer together with the people; inherited from the Anatolian Seljuks, this tradition—along with the minting of coins and the mention of the ruler’s name in the Friday sermon—was regarded as one of the fundamental symbols of sovereignty and caliphal authority. In the parade, strictly governed by protocol, the sultan (on horseback until Abdülhamid II, thereafter by carriage) proceeded to a selatin or coastal mosque accompanied by the Imperial Band; state dignitaries, janissaries, and the public lined the route, a formal parade was held, and petitions were presented directly to the sultan. While functioning as an institutional grievance mechanism that facilitated sultan–people communication, this ceremony was simultaneously a political ritual that visually reinforced the legitimacy of power and was recorded in detail in Ottoman protocol literature.” The conference concluded thereafter.
